This album documents an epoque in the life of Montreal artist and party personality commonly known as “Beaver,” who is a veritable renaissance man. The epoque is one where he had lived above Cinema L’amour; currently a porn theatre but also famous for being the site of Harry Houdini’s last show, where he was dealt the deadly blow that ultimately killed him. Here he [Beaver, not Houdini] improvised a lot of music to 4-track, many of which eventually became tunes that are recognized by attendees of the hundreds of shows he has played.

During this time I had been dumping the 4-tracks to computer, mastering them, recording on top, and had a bunch of sessions where Beaver came over and showed one of his other many arts, cooking. Even when the fridge & cupboard looked pretty empty we ate like kings then continued to “super-produce” the shit out of the thing. Many months later we were pretty close to finishing the record, but life kept going at such a pace that it took around 3 years to completely finish the album you now hear. I believe this will come to be known as one of Beaver’s [many] masterpieces.

This second solo album and first vinyl release from Eric Gingras is just plain awesome. Such a strange but somehow totally coherent mix of folk, pop, prog, ambient, post-jazz, somewhere between 1970 and 2020.

A second album for his second daughter. Beautiful.

Check out full lyrics and listen here.

This is the first Heart + Soul track ever recorded, and it sure did hit the spot! Equally faithful to its UR techno inspiration and Montreal indie-weirdo reality. This track was later released on Panospria as “Planet Nebula” on the Cosmic Signals ep.

The B side is a 20-minute synthesizer workout by Collis Browne, recorded in 2 sessions to 8-track analog tape using the “blind-multi” method. In this method we start with a first cut [in this case the original H&S track], and repeatedly overdub different parts without hearing them together. The result is like a controlled palimpsest, but since all tracks are related equally to the original, the result still has a musical uniformity. This is opposed to the “blind-chinese” method, where each track is recorded while listening only to the previous version, so that the result has a deconstruction where, like in the Chinese Whispers game where it gets its name [aka broken telephone], the later tracks have less and less direct relation to the original.

Oh yeah, and it sounds great too.

6 best Misfits tunes rapid-recorded in 3 hours with hammond church-basement-style organ and voice, very unique and super-catchy. Organ gets more cranky and noisy over the recording session so the result is very lo-fi charm, and the somewhat erodable flexidisc is the perfect format to compliment the concept.

This is a rare Collis Browne solo effort. AND, even more rare legal clearance was purchased from Danzig himself [via various music industry bureaucracy].

Among the strangest records we’ve made [or heard for that matter]. Fundamentally, a clarinet + saxophone duet album by Simon Called Peter and Collis Browne, but has so many other different elements, recording techniques, moods and melodies that it is a bit hard to explain. Some examples of reactions:

a review for the Montreal Mirror: “Local sax and clarinet players Simon Bélair and Colin Vernon (members of Rivers and Mountains and the Natacha Recordings Sound System) have created a minimal, fragmented, fluttering 10-inch record, with warped moments evoking a broken music box submerged in water. It’s just begging for “experimental” film accompaniment—I’m picturing a loop of a man in a straightjacket and a pacing guard who drops a handful of tacks on the floor, slo-mo close-up on those tacks and the man’s horrified reaction. My cat was fascinated.”

a group of people hanging out at home smoke too much of a huge “cigar” [hint hint], this record is put on and everyone is eventually dragged down into a mute bad-trip. Nice.

The words “not for everyone” might describe this but it is a super great and unique work.

This was a split release between noweapon & Natacha’s recordings, who have since taken their site offline and mysteriously removed mention of a number of artists & contributors involved. Pas grave.
